Donny, I've been informed that two additional photos where Carl can be seen with the prototype can be found in the book "The Beach Boys and the California Myth" (originally published in 1978) by David Leaf on pages 66 & 67 - I don't own this book nor have I ever seen those pics, but it might be worth trying to find a copy.Īs far as Carl's use of the Fender XII on Beach Boys-recordings is concerned, it might very well be possible that he used it on the tracks you mentioned - I've also wondered for some time now if the 12-string intro of "California Girls" (which was released in July '65) might indeed have been played on the XII, as it really sounds like one.a BB-song which definitely seems to feature a XII is "Sloop John B.", as it's documented that Billy Strange played one (at Brian Wilson's request) on the recording.the story goes that Strange was asked by Brian Wilson to record an electric 12-string guitarpart for the song, however Strange informed Wilson that he didn't own an electric 12-string guitar at that time, so Wilson immediately had someone dispatched to the nearest music store to pick up a Fender XII plus a Twin Reverb amp which he then gave to Strange.the latter used the XII plus the Twin Reverb for his overdub on December 29th 1965, got US $500 in cash from Wilson for his contribution and was told by Wilson that he could keep the XII plus the amp as well. David Leaf and His Book About the Beach Boys, 'God Only Knows: The Story of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys and the California Myth' Myths are funny things, especially in the 21st century where we find ourselves constantly reevaluating standards that were accepted as gospel only a few years ago.
